Understanding Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a long-term condition where fluid builds up in the body’s tissues, causing swelling — most often in the arms or legs. This happens when the lymphatic system (which normally helps drain fluid and fight infection) becomes damaged or overloaded.
There are two main types:
Primary lymphoedema – caused by a problem in the lymphatic system that’s present from birth.
Secondary lymphoedema – develops after damage to the lymphatic system, often following surgery, radiotherapy, infection, or injury.
Early signs can include heaviness, tightness, or swelling in a limb, or clothing and jewellery feeling tighter. Without early care, the swelling can worsen and lead to skin changes or infections like cellulitis.
While lymphoedema can’t be cured, it can be managed. Treatment focuses on reducing swelling and preventing complications through compression therapy, exercise, good skin care, and early intervention.
If you notice persistent swelling or are at risk (for example, after cancer treatment), talk to your healthcare provider or find an Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner
